Rolling Golden Holy by Bonny Light Horseman
Bonny Light Horseman is one of my favorite supergroups of the 2020’s. One of its members is even in both of my favorite supergroups of the decade! Bonny Light Horseman Website
This band consists of Eric Johnson, Josh Kaufman, and Anais Mitchell. This band is near and dear to my heart because I have been a diehard fan of Eric D. Johnson of the group Fruit Bats since the age of 16. Every one of his projects sonically transcends time and space taking me on a little time warp back to my friends from high school. I love every album he releases and felt a little late to the party when I discovered Bonny Light Horseman a year after their first release 2020’s self-titled Bonny Light Horseman…I blame the pandemic for the delay in my self-discovery.
The album is phenomenal and capable of transportation, I immediately recognized the stylings of one of my favorite musicians for hire Josh Kaufman. The multi-instrumental styling of Kaufman can be heard across Indie rock music. I first discovered Kaufman in the supergroup Muzz with the frontman Paul Banks of Interpol also released in 2020(this guy is busy!)…but he also plays with the National, Taylor Swift, and has produced some of my favorite artists like Cassandra Jenkins album An Overview on Phenomenal Nature. Anais Mitchells unique Americana call was new to me but I immediately loved her voice and her vocal harmonies with Eric. The combination of banjo, dulcimer, acoustic guitars, and organ tones will take you on a time travel journey back to the musical origins of this country. Dive in and listen.
Peace,
Will
